The Connacht Rugby Club and Community Department held an U14 schools blitz at Tuam RFC yesterday with over 200 pupils from nine schools taking part.
The aim of the event was to provide multiple non-competitive games for the young students with a number of the youngsters playing rugby for the first time.
The schools involved were St. Joseph’s Patrician College (The Bish); Coláiste Iognaid (The Jes); Calasanctius College, Oranmore; Scoil Chuimsitheach Chiaráin, Carraroe; Coláiste Éinde, Galway; Gort Community School; St Raphael’s College, Loughrea; St Jarlath’s College, Tuam; St Brigid’s Vocational School, Loughrea.
Thirteen teams played across four pitches in a series of small sided games with some excellent attacking skills on display in the very successful event. Another blitz will take place three weeks after the mid-term break with the students getting another opportunity to give rugby a try.
As always, Tuam RFC were great hosts and provided fantastic facilities. Club and Community Rugby Officer (CCRO) Conor Galvin co-ordinated the event and received help on the day from Connacht staff Lyndon Jones, Walter Gibbons and Peter O’Hara.
Connacht Rugby would like to thank the teachers and volunteers that helped facilitate the event, especially John Ward and Jimmy Maughan of Tuam RFC.
