Over 70 players took part in the inaugural Girls Secondary Schools 7’s Blitz that was held in Tuam on Thursday. Competing in two age brackets, U15 and U18, teams from Sacred Heart Westport, The Convent Ballina, The Convent Ballinasloe, The Mercy Tuam and Davitt College battled it out in Gurran Park, the home of Tuam RFC. This was the first of three blitzes, with the winners of the final blitz going on to represent Connacht in the Aviva Stadium in the National tournament. Played in glorious sunshine and watched on by Irelands Nora Stapleton the event was a huge success and Connacht Womens Development Officer Wendy Hickey was delighted with the turnout: “It’s been a fantastic day with some real emerging talent on show. We’re hoping to replicate this event several times a season which will expose these blossoming athletes to more and more quality matches. With 7’s now part of the Olympic games it’s great to see a programme like this take off and see so many young women taking part and hopefully some of them can go all the way and represent Ireland at a national level.” “Tuam have been great hosts, without a facility like this the day wouldn’t have been as successful and I’d like to pay special tribute to all of the teachers who have made the effort to bring busses from across the province to be here today.”
