NEW COACH AT BUCCANEERS
BUCCANEERS have announced NEAL CULLITON as their new Coach for the forthcoming season. A player for some 13 years with Wanderers and latterly CYM where he also coached, Culliton is steeped in rugby tradition, his father Jerry winning many Ireland caps in the Sixties. Neal has recently coached for two seasons each at Mullingar and Longford and has also coached Cistercian College, Roscrea. It is anticipated that Colm Rigney and Leighton Christopher will assist Culliton. Neal takes up the role jointly held by Tony Dolan and Jude Lennon who steered Buccs to the Division 2 title and retained their Division 1 status last season. The club acknowledges their immense contributions to date and wishes them continued success in their future coaching assignments.
Training starts this Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. and will continue on Tuesdays and Thursdays with some extra weekend sessions to be advised. Buccaneers are a little bit behind in their preparations so it is essential that all players attend early and consistently to make up any lost ground.
MIDLANDS SEVENS TOURNAMENT
BUCCANEERS RFC is holding their inaugural Midlands Sevens rugby tournament at Dubarry Park, Athlone, on Saturday, August 15th. The tournament will have a minimum of 8 teams, primarily from Connacht and the Midlands, but indeed teams outside this catchment area will be most welcome to participate as it should provide a great opportunity for clubs of both Senior and Junior status to pit their wits against one another whilst also finding out their true fitness and team spirit levels just before the real season kicks off. Squads can consist of 12 players and it is intended that a Womens Sevens competition will also take place on the same day. Closing date for entries is Friday, July 31st. Further information can be obtained from Alex Hayman or Geraldine at 086-1732711 or on www.buccaneersrfc.com
Dubarry Park should be a hive of activity on Sunday when the latest round of the All-Ireland series of Marching Bands takes place, starting at 1.30 p.m. Hosted by the Athlone Ravens Marching Band, over 2,000 band members and supporters are expected at the midlands venue and, as this scribe writes, a Canadian marching band is going through their drills on the hallowed turf at Dubarry Park. They have no less than three hired buses and a truck with them! So this event should prove a huge tonic both financially and entertainment-wise for the town of Athlone.
LEUKEMIA FUND BBQ
‘Friends of Michael Hanley' are holding a BBQ at The Bounty on this Saturday night with an early 7 p.m. start. A bumper crowd is anticipated and the place should be hopping for this most worthwhile cause commemorating the late Michael, who was one of the club's unique and generous characters. Music and entertainment will be provided by a bevy of artists including Bernard & Patrice Coyle, P.J.Stacey, Midland Youth Orchestra and Reel Rhythm Irish Dancers. Tickets are only €20 each for what should be a "craicing" night in aid of a worthy fund. Tickets can be purchased from the organising committee or at The Bounty.
NEW DATE FOR GOLF CLASSIC
BUCCANEERS Annual Golf Classic will now take place at Glasson Golf & Country Club on Wednesday, August 19th. Entries from teams of four are invited and Hugh Conlon is chief organiser of this long-standing event. Early booking is, of course, advised for preferential tee off times. Entry fee is very attractive at only €240 per team this year. Hole and Tee sponsors are welcome. Full details and bookings can be made via our Administrator Geraldine at 086-1732711.
There was widespread shock at the sudden passing of John Gately. He was a great supporter and attender of many sporting codes with Athlone Town FC and Buccaneers RFC both being close to his heart. He could always be counted on to have an opinion on match officials and/or any player playing below expectations! Outside the club's committee, John was our greatest seller of Draw tickets and will be sorely missed. But, of course, the greatest loss is to his wife Anne and three young children to whom our deepest sympathy is extended.
Congrats to Martin Webster on his recent 40th birthday. Hopefully, he survived the surprise party which, by all accounts, was one hell of a do!
